Three Days in Kolkata: A Realistic Sightseeing Itinerary

Dakshineswar Kali Temple, a stop on a 3-day Kolkata itinerary

A three-day Kolkata itinerary gives enough time to cover the city’s major landmarks without the rushed feeling of trying to fit everything into a single day, and it’s the length of trip we plan most often for visitors arriving from outside West Bengal. The first day typically covers the central landmarks — Victoria Memorial, the Maidan, and Howrah Bridge — since these sit close enough together to move between without long drives.

Day two works best for North Kolkata’s older, denser neighbourhoods: Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Belur Math in the morning, followed by College Street, the Marble Palace, and Jorasanko Thakur Bari in the afternoon. This is also the day to fit in a food walk, since North Kolkata’s older markets and sweet shops are best explored on foot rather than from a car window.

The third day usually has more flexibility built in — some visitors use it for Science City and a slower look at South Kolkata’s newer commercial districts, while others prefer a half-day trip to Dakshineswar’s surrounding riverside or a boat ride on the Hooghly. Families travelling with children often move Science City to day one instead, since it works well early when energy levels are highest.

Traffic is the main variable that changes how much a single day can realistically hold; central Kolkata’s roads are busiest between roughly 9am and 11am and again from 5pm to 8pm, so itineraries built around those windows tend to run smoother than ones that ignore them. A private car with a driver who knows the city’s traffic patterns typically covers noticeably more ground per day than relying on point-to-point taxis booked individually.

Three days is also enough time to add one half-day trip outside the city itself — Shantiniketan or a Sundarban day visit both work as an add-on for travellers with slightly more time, though a proper Sundarban trip is better planned as its own overnight rather than squeezed into an existing Kolkata itinerary.

Chandrawanshi Tour & Travels builds this exact kind of three-day plan around your arrival and departure times rather than a fixed template, using our Kolkata 2-day tour package as a base and extending it, or arranging a full-day cab hire for the more flexible third day.
