Digha Beach: A Complete Guide to West Bengal’s Most Popular Coastal Getaway

Crowds enjoying the beach at Digha, West Bengal

Digha beach is West Bengal’s most popular coastal getaway, roughly 185 km south of Kolkata and reachable in about three to four hours by road via NH116B — the state’s busiest and most developed beach town, and usually the first place first-time visitors to Bengal’s coast think of.

The beach itself is long, flat, and wide, running for several kilometres along the Bay of Bengal, which makes it comfortable for a slow evening walk as much as for a proper swim; New Digha, the more developed stretch, has most of the hotels and the promenade, while Old Digha a little further along is quieter and less commercial.

Beyond the beach, the Marine Aquarium and Regional Science Centre gives a rainy-day option worth an hour or two, and Shankarpur, a working fishing harbour a short drive away, is worth a stop for anyone curious about the local fishing trade rather than just the tourist strip.

Chandaneswar Temple, just across the West Bengal–Odisha border, and Talsari beach nearby are common half-day add-ons for visitors staying two or more nights in Digha, giving a quieter coastal alternative without a long extra drive.

October to February is the most comfortable season, with cooler temperatures and calmer seas than the monsoon months between June and September, when the surf gets rough and swimming is often restricted for safety.

Chandrawanshi Tour & Travels regularly arranges Digha trips as part of our weekend getaway packages — see our SUV rental for the most comfortable ride down the coast with family or a group.
