Sundarban Tiger Safari: What to Realistically Expect

A watchtower in Sundarban National Park used for tiger safaris

A Sundarban tiger safari is built around boat routes past known watchtowers and creek crossings rather than a guaranteed sighting — the Royal Bengal Tigers of the Sundarbans are elusive by nature, and even experienced guides can go multiple trips without a confirmed spotting, so it’s worth going in with realistic expectations set by the guides themselves rather than by marketing.

The safari itself runs from a boat along the mangrove creeks and rivers that make up the delta, stopping at watchtowers such as Sudhanyakhali, Dobanki, and Sajnekhali, where raised platforms and, in some cases, canopy walkways let visitors scan the surrounding forest and waterholes without leaving the boat’s protected route.

Early morning and late afternoon are the times guides rate as giving the best odds, when tigers are more likely to be near the water’s edge; October to March is the recommended season overall, both for safer boat conditions and because the forest canopy is less dense than during the monsoon growth period.

Even without a tiger sighting, a Sundarban safari reliably turns up spotted deer, wild boar, and a wide range of birdlife, including kingfishers and, with some luck, the white-bellied sea eagle; saltwater crocodiles are also commonly seen sunning near the creek banks, and Irrawaddy dolphins occasionally surface in the wider river channels.

Safaris run with licensed forest guides required by regulation, both for safety and because they’re trained to read recent tracks and local reports of sightings — independent boat trips without a registered guide aren’t permitted in the core tiger reserve area.

Chandrawanshi Tour & Travels arranges licensed guides and permits as part of every Sundarban tiger safari booking, and pairs well with our broader Sundarban tour packages for a full multi-day itinerary rather than a single safari run.
