North Bengal has more to offer than Darjeeling and Dooars alone, and the offbeat places in this part of West Bengal reward travellers willing to add an extra day or two off the standard hill-station circuit.
Kalimpong, a quieter hill town about an hour from Darjeeling, is known for its Buddhist monasteries, including Zang Dhok Palri Phodang, its flower nurseries that supply orchids and gladioli across India, and the views from Durpin Dara hill, which take in the Teesta and Relli river valleys below.
Lava and Rishop, small villages further into the hills near Kalimpong, offer some of the clearest close-up views of Kangchenjunga available anywhere in the region, along with quiet forest walks that see a fraction of the foot traffic Darjeeling’s viewpoints get during peak season.
Suntaleykhola and Samsing, on the edge of Neora Valley National Park, are less-visited eco-tourism spots built around forest walks, birdwatching, and the Murti River, and work well as a one- or two-night stop for travellers connecting between Darjeeling and the Dooars.
Gajoldoba, near the Teesta Barrage, has become a stop specifically for birdwatchers during the winter migratory season, with the barrage’s reservoir drawing species not commonly seen elsewhere in the region, and clear-day views of the Kanchenjunga range from the surrounding open plains.
Road conditions to most of these offbeat spots are narrower and slower than the main Darjeeling or Siliguri routes, so they suit travellers with a flexible schedule better than a tightly timed itinerary — a private car with a driver familiar with these smaller roads makes a real difference here.
Chandrawanshi Tour & Travels can build any of these into a longer North Bengal itinerary rather than a rushed add-on — see our offbeat North Bengal package or our Gajoldoba tour package for a birdwatching-focused stop.
